Spring break spotlights tournaments

By CT McDonald

After last year’s spring sports season was disrupted by the COVID-19 virus, it’s back to business now with sports tournaments highlighting the annual spring break holidays.

And some local teams are right in the middle of it.

Dutch Fork’s defending 5A state champion baseball team (2019 state tournament) kicked off the Forest Acres Classic baseball tournament at A. C. Flora’s Falcon Field earlier this week with a 9-0 win against Flora and followed that with a 15-7 win against Atlantic Shores Christian on Tuesday.

That advanced the Silver Foxes to Wednesday’s game versus Gray Collegiate Wednesday afternoon with the finals set for today, Thursday. The 3rd place game is at 9 am, 2nd place game at noon, and the championship matchup is at 3 pm.

Chapin’s varsity baseball team is competing in the SC Diamond Invitational tournament this week, with games starting Wednesday and running through Saturday. The tournament will take place at two fields; Lexington and Brookland Cayce (BC).

The Eagles were to kick it off at noon Wednesday against Greenville at the Brookland-Cayce field, and then play again at noon on Thursday versus BC. On Friday Chapin will take on Dorman at 4 pm, again at the Brookland-Cayce field.

That leads up to the finals games on Saturday. The 2nd place game is at noon at Lexington High School, and the tournament championship game is at 4 pm, also at Lexington. Meanwhile the 4th place game is at noon at Brookland-Cayce, and the 3rd place matchup is at 4 pm, also at BC.

There are various baseball and soccer tournaments in play this week involving other teams from around the area and beyond. And then it’s back to school and the regular schedule.
