Aaron Brand named coach of the year

Irmo High School varsity football coach Aaron Brand has been named by his peers as the 2020 South Carolina Region 4A Coach of the Year. The award is presented annually.

“I am extremely honored and blessed to receive such a high honor,” Brand said. “The fact that my peers chose me makes it more gratifying. I accept this award on behalf of my entire staff and Irmo High School, for it is a collective effort award more so than an individual honor. Go Irmo.”

Brand has been the head football coach at Irmo High School since May of 2019. The team finished the season with an overall 7-3 record and were ranked number two in the 4A region. The 4A region includes A. C. Flora High, Dreher High, Irmo High, Lugoff-Elgin High, Richland Northeast High, and Westwood High.

Previously, Brand coached at Mallard Creek High School, Independence High School, West Charlotte High School, West Mecklenburg High School, and Emory and Henry College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Emory and Henry College and has taught P.E. for more than 20 years.

“It truly is impressive that our region coaches recognize Coach Brand’s continuous improvement efforts for our football team,” Irmo High School principal Dr. Robin Hardy said. “I am proud ‘AB’ is leading and guiding our young people to excellence on and off the field.”
