Albert “Al” Leonard Dozier

June 2, 1943 – September 29, 2025

Albert “Al” Leonard Dozier of Columbia, South Carolina, a respected journalist who worked for newspapers throughout the state, passed away on September 29, 2025.

The family held a private gathering in his honor. There will be a celebration of life set for later this fall.

Al was born in Columbia on June 2, 1943, the son of the late Willis and Margaret Dozier. He was a proud graduate of Dreher High School and the University of South Carolina, where he earned his degree in journalism—a calling that became his lifelong passion.

He began his career as a reporter for the Greenville (S.C.) Piedmont and later joined the Rock Hill Herald. From 1998 to 2005, he served as managing editor of the Lincoln Times-News in Lincolnton, North Carolina. After retiring, Al continued to write as a freelance journalist for newspapers in the Columbia and Lexington area. Al received awards from the Associated Press and South Carolina Press Association for his investigative journalism.

While living in Lincolnton, Al was active in the community, serving on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as president of the Toastmasters Club.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Shuri Dozier; his son, Michael Dozier (Rebecca); and three beloved grandchildren, Mallory, Grant, and Macie Dozier. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Dozier, and brothers Duncan, John, and Michael Dozier.

Al will be remembered for his sharp wit, steadfast curiosity, and kind spirit. He had a deep love for his family, his friends, and the written word. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the people he inspired, and the family who loved him dearly.

Publisher’s note: I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with Al for the last 20 years. His first byline in the New Irmo News ran in 2006 and each week he provided spot-on coverage of the local municipalities all of our newspapers covered. He never shied from a story and alway brought an honest understanding to some tough stories while always staying with the facts.

We will sorely miss his writing expertise and his casual approach to journalism.

R.I.P. Al and God Bless.
