An Open Letter to Irmo Voters

Dear Voters,

What a great time to live in the Town of Irmo – we have so much to celebrate and be proud of!

I have been a resident of the Town of Irmo for over 33 years.  I moved to Irmo for a Faculty position in the Biology Department at USC, from which I am now retired.  When my husband and I bought a home in Irmo, the quality of life and excellent schools were key attractions.  My daughter grew up here and attended District Five schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Since being elected in 2021, I have worked to make Irmo a better place to live, work and play.  During my term as a Councilmember I have: supported Irmo PD and the Public Service Department by approving expenditures for equipment to make our employees’ jobs safer and more efficient; spearheaded the School Showcase and Community Connections at Council meetings; served as a liaison between the Town and our local schools, improving relations with School District Five; worked to establish an Irmo Youth Council; supported the development of the Rawls Creek Park; supported new Town-sponsored community events;  carefully reviewed the annual budget; assisted with revising and clarifying numerous Ordinances, including Zoning and Land Development Ordinances; contributed to and adopted Vision 2035; and pursued relevant professional development.

To maintain, and improve, the quality of life for our residents, we must balance residential growth and commercial growth.  Since Irmo residents do not pay property taxes to the Town, it is important to make the Town of Irmo an attractive location for businesses, and encourage support of our local businesses so that they will not only survive, but thrive.

It would be my privilege to continue to serve the residents of the Town of Irmo and contribute to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Irmo by making careful, thoughtful decisions.  Should you choose to re-elect me to serve as a Town Councilmember, I will continue to listencarefully, pay attention to the details, and evaluate the issue at hand based on the information presented and otherwise available.  My many years of experience as a scientist have taught me not to make assumptions, jump to conclusions, or make rash decisions.  Decisions will always be made with the best interest of the Town uppermost in mind, regardless of my personal opinion on the matter.

Thoughtful Leadership – that’s what I’ll continue to bring to the Irmo Town Council if re-elected on November 4th.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barb Waldman
