A local group of artists and supporters have formed The Greater Irmo Artist Guild with the purpose of bringing Art and Public Art to Irmo and the surrounding area.
Spearheaded by Kim Winn of the Artistic Aspirations Community Art Center in Irmo, the group is comprised of Kim, local artists Sean Madden, Kevin Pettit and Kimberly Oakley along with Irmo Councilman Gabriel Penfield and local Community Supporter Brent Chitwood. Other local artists or supporters are welcome to join and participate.
The first project was a Mural Project on the side of Mathias Sandwich Shop in Irmo. The Original 1960s Irmo High School Yellow Jacket Mascot was proposed and received.
The Non-Profit Irmo Arbor Day Committee, that has supported many projects in our area, agreed to accept the deductible contributions from the many local supporters. Kim Winn and Sean Madden created a 10 foot tall “Sting”. A dedication of the completed mural was held at 6 pm July 8 at the Mathias Sandwich Shop at 7235 St. Andrews Road, Irmo.
Multiple mural sites and concepts for various Public Art have been proposed. Possible future projects include a mural to honor the Irmo Fire Department or one to promote the Irmo Cherry Blossom Festival. Physical Art projects such as sculptures or metalworks are also possibilities.
The sponsors for the initial Yellow Jacket project were: Home Again Properties, Relational Wealth , Chitwood CRE, Hill Construction, Lanny Gunter, David’s Fine Jewelry, Kings Restorations, Jake Moore, Poore Furnishings, Parking Lot Kings.
