Blowfish look to clinch playoff berth

By Thomas Grant Jr.

It’s an important final week of the regular season for the Lexington County Blowfish.

With four games left, the Blowfish look to maintain their playoff position in the Coastal Plain League West Division. It trailed 3 ½ games to frontrunner Forest City, against whom they are winless this season, but held a 1 ½ game lead over the Boone Bigfoots and 2 ½ games over the Asheboro Zookeepers for second place.

Only the top three teams in each division qualify for the Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup playoffs. This year’s format has the second and third-place teams meeting in a one-game playoff to advance to the divisional round.

A Best-of-Three series will take place to determine the Petitt Cup finalists. The Blowfish have reached the finals two years in a row and won in 2023.

If the standings remain this way through Saturday, the Blowfish will play host to the one-game playoff Sunday.

Lexington will close out its regular-season home schedule Friday against the Macon Bacon. It’s Fan Appreciation Night, and attendees are being encouraged to bring a can of chicken and tuna in support of Mission Lexington.

All donors will be entered into a contest to win a cap.

The Blowfish will also hold another “Concert in the Sky” fireworks show. The following night, they will travel to Macon to close out the regular season and a playoff berth.
