Coach Bob Hanna

Robert W. “Bob” Hanna, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in James Island on March 6, 2026. Born in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Tony and Rita Hanna.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Hanna; his son, Bobby Hanna (Amanda) of North Carolina; his daughter, Amy Bartle (Chris) of North Carolina; and his stepdaughter, Callie Webster (David) of South Carolina. Bob was a proud and devoted “Pap-Pap” to Emma, Ellakate, Gunner, Cameron, Carson, Hailey, Emily, Aidan, and Owen. He was preceded in death by Joyce Hanna, the mother of Bobby and Amy.

Bob attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he lettered in football and served as team captain during his senior year. Following college, he embarked on a remarkable 50-year career in high school coaching across North and South Carolina.

Over the course of his career, he led football programs at multiple schools, including Irmo High School, where he became the winningest head football coach in the school’s history. He concluded his coaching career at James Island High School.

Coach Hanna’s list of accomplishments was extensive. He coached in the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game, the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, and the North-South All-Star Game. He was named 4A State Coach of the Year, earned Midlands Coach of the Year honors five times, and received the 4A Athletic Director of the Year award.

He was inducted into the South Carolina Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame as well as the Irmo High School Hall of Fame. In recognition of his impact, he also received certificates of commendation from the South Carolina House and Senate and the United States House of Representatives.

Above all his achievements, Coach Bob Hanna will be remembered for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his players and the game he loved. He believed deeply that every player was a winner and lived his life devoted to God, family, and football.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Athletic Department at Irmo High School in his memory.
