The Columbia Philatelic Society will hold its winter stamp show Sept. 25 and 26 at the Tri-City Leisure Center, 485 Brooks Ave., in West Columbia.
The show will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Fourteen professional stamp dealers will be on hand offering stamps, postcards, covers and postal history. Dealers also will be available to appraise stamp collections and individual items.
Club members will exhibit portions of their collections. Past exhibits have included the history of scouting through stamps; some of the first U.S. postage stamps; real and counterfeit stamps from around the world; stamps and covers commemorating the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowpens; first-day covers autographed by Hollywood celebrities, astronauts and U.S. presidents; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles postcards.
A featured exhibit will be “History of the United States in Stamps,” commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
A special table will be available for children interested in learning about stamp collecting. Free stamps also will be available for anyone interested in starting the hobby.
Admission and parking are free. A drawing will be held each hour for a $10 gift certificate that can be used at the show.
The Columbia Philatelic Society has met regularly since 1935 and is the oldest stamp club in South Carolina. The society is a member of the American Philatelic Society, the world’s largest nonprofit organization for stamp collectors.
The club meets from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month at the Tri-City Leisure Center. When a holiday falls on the third Sunday, the club meets on the second Sunday.
Each meeting features a presentation by a member on a topic related to stamp collecting. Past programs have included identifying counterfeit stamps, the world’s most valuable postage stamps, the history of postal vending machines, and visits to the U.S. Stamp Museum in Washington, D.C., and the local stamp museum in Charleston.
Members and visitors who cannot attend in person, including those from out of town, may participate through Zoom. Visitors are welcome at club meetings.
