Community Spotlight: Senior Chief Neil Paul leads pledge at town council

The most recent Irmo Town Council meeting opened with a reminder of service and dedication as Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate Neil Paul led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

A longtime fixture of South Carolina’s public service landscape, Paul’s background reflects a lifelong commitment to both maritime security and state law enforcement. His military journey began in 1983 when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard in Charleston.

While maintaining his military obligations, Paul simultaneously built a career with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, serving Berkeley County. His professional legacy is perhaps most defined by his leadership in a major institutional shift: overseeing the transition of the Size and Weight Department (Commercial Truck Enforcement) into what is now a standalone state agency, the SC State Transport Police. Paul eventually retired from the agency at the rank of Captain.

His commitment to country was called upon once more following the events of September 11, 2001. Paul was called to active duty as a Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class, continuing his service in Charleston until his naval retirement in 2010 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer.

Beyond his uniform, Paul is celebrating a significant personal milestone. He and his wife, Alice, will celebrate 54 years of marriage next month—a testament to the same steadfast dedication he has shown to his community and country for over four decades.
