Dominion increases incentives for appliance recycling

In observance of National Recycling Day Novem 15, Dominion Energy South Carolina is sharing its commitment to protecting the environment and the communities it serves while reminding customers of the company’s free Appliance Recycling Program.

Now through December 31, residential electric service customers can schedule a free, no-contact pickup of their old, secondary refrigerators and freezers and receive $100 cash back – double the usual amount. Customers who participate in the program could save up to $105 annually on their energy bills. An eligible unit must be full-sized and in working condition.

Since the Appliance Recycling Program began in 2014, more than 17,000 refrigerators and freezers have been collected. By using best environmental practices, the program has potentially diverted 1,052 tons of waste from landfills, including:

• 875 tons of iron-based metals
• 42 tons of non-iron-based metals
• 25 tons of glass
• 110 tons of plastic

“We are focusing on helping our customers recycle older appliances as they upgrade to newer, more energy-efficient units,” said Josh McMillin, program manager. “The opportunity to reduce their energy usage is great for their wallets and the environment. It’s a win-win.”

In addition to helping customers recycle and replace unwanted appliances, Dominion Energy is reducing its own environmental footprint. From July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, the company recycled more than 382,000 tons of material in South Carolina, including:

• 8.9 tons of aluminum cans and foil
• 8.9 tons of plastic bottles
• 127 tons of cardboard
• 2.55 tons of magazines and newspaper
• 464 tons of office paper
• 37 tons of electronics, including cell phones
