The Northwest YMCA now features a new 9-hole disc golf course thanks to Dutch Fork High School student Pearl Owens, who completed the project as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award.

As a dedicated Girl Scout, Owens led the design and installation of the course to create a fun and accessible recreational opportunity for the Irmo community and YMCA members. She developed the layout with the goal of encouraging families and teens to get outdoors for light exercise and community connection, helping combat sedentary lifestyles by providing alternative activities.
The project required more than a year of planning, construction, and volunteer coordination. From course design and site preparation to organizing community support, Owens demonstrated the leadership and service central to the Gold Award’s mission of creating sustainable, long-term community impact.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in late January, and the course is now open for public play.
