Empowered Wellness: A Fresh Look at What Your Body Needs This Summer

By Jennifer Tardy, Certified Holistic Nutritionist & Integrative Health Coach

With so much conflicting health information out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But wellness doesn’t have to be complicated—it should feel empowering. Each season offers us simple ways to support the body naturally. Here’s what’s new in the world of health and how you can take small, meaningful steps to feel your best.

Just Five Minutes of Movement Improves Brain Health

A new study shows that even five minutes of light movement a day can significantly improve cognitive function. Researchers found that simple activities like brisk walking, water aerobics, or light jogging were associated with better focus, faster mental processing, and improved memory—especially in older adults.

The takeaway? You don’t need an intense workout routine to benefit your brain. A short walk or gentle activity that gets you slightly out of breath can be enough to make a measurable difference.

Summer Herbs Offer More Than Flavor

Seasonal herbs are more than culinary tools—they offer powerful health benefits. Here are a few to explore:

  • Peppermint supports digestion and can ease bloating. Try it brewed as iced tea or infused in water.
  • Chamomile has calming effects on both the digestive system and the nervous system.
  • Basil is packed with antioxidants and adds fresh flavor to salads or homemade pesto.
  • Cilantro aids in detoxification and pairs well with salsas or guacamole.
  • Dandelion greens stimulate digestion and are great sautéed or added to salads.

Adding fresh herbs to your meals is a simple way to support your body while enjoying fresh, seasonal flavors.

Spending Time in Nature Supports Gut Health

We often hear about probiotics and fiber, but did you know that time outdoors also benefits your gut?

Our ancestors had regular exposure to microbes from soil, plants, and animals—something most modern lifestyles lack. Getting outside, walking barefoot in the grass, working in a garden, or taking a stroll through a wooded area can help reintroduce these beneficial microbes and strengthen the immune system.

Incorporating nature into your daily routine may help support both mental clarity and microbiome diversity—foundational elements of good health.

Artificial Dyes to Be Removed from Major Food Brands

In an encouraging move, several major food companies have committed to removing harmful artificial dyes such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Blue 1 from popular products.

These synthetic dyes have long been associated with behavioral issues in children, allergic reactions, and potential carcinogenic effects. This shift reflects the growing demand for transparency and safer ingredients in everyday foods—and is a reminder that our purchasing choices truly do make a difference.
