Richland County is celebrating the success of its next generation of leaders! Students who completed the Columbia-Richland Fire Department’s Youth Empowerment Academy were honored in a special ceremony featuring local leaders and community partners.
Richland County Administrator Leonardo Brown, County Council Chairwoman Jesica Mackey (District 9), and J.T. McLawhorn Jr., President of the Columbia Urban League, joined Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins and other officials to recognize the students’ achievements.
The two-week summer program, a collaboration between the Fire Department and the Columbia Urban League, is designed to inspire, educate, and equip high school students for future success. Along with hands-on lessons in fire and emergency services, participants learn valuable life skills—like teamwork, leadership, and the power of strong mentorship.
“This academy is more than just a summer program,” said Chief Jenkins. “It’s about building confidence, making connections, and helping young people see their own potential.”
Congratulations to the graduates on a job well done—and a bright future ahead!
