Golf Tips for Seniors: The Chip and Run

By Robin All

Over the past few weeks, we’ve focused on putting mechanics. Today, let’s take those same principles and apply them to one of golf’s most reliable short-game shots—the chip and run.

This shot can be played with a 6- or 7-iron, or even a lofted fairway wood or hybrid. The key is to keep it simple—just like putting. There’s no need for wrist action to “help” the ball into the air. Many golfers think that’s necessary for loft, but the truth is, the angle of the clubface will do the work for you.

Here are a few tips:

  • Place most of your weight on your front foot.

  • Use a firm, wrist-free, sweeping motion.

  • Focus on brushing the grass, trusting the club to provide the loft.

Solid chipping makes putting easier—and often saves strokes. Practice this simple approach, and you’ll see improvement in no time.
