Irmo Town Council called a special council meeting on Tuesday, August 4 to give a final reading to an ordinance to legally change the way the town does business. Passing the ordinance allows for the question to be put on the November ballot so residents can vote to change the form of government to a Council – Manager form. This change makes sure that ordinances match the proper form of government.
Currently the town is under a Council Form of government but hasn’t ran itself that way in decades. Small towns and municipalities often use the Council Form due to their size and budgets. Since they have no need for a staff or an administrator to handle the everyday business of the town the duties are handled by council members.
As Irmo grew in size and population they transitioned to a Council-Manager Form but never made it entirely legal. In the Council-Manager Form the council sets the polices and the day to day business and operations are ran by a professional town manager and staff. This is the way Irmo currently conducts business.
The motion passed to place the question on the ballot in November.
In other business the town passed an approval for an agreement with the County of Lexington for the Community Block Grant Program Home Investment Partnership Program. This is HUD managed grants to build stronger communities by providing affordable housing, improving public infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities for low and moderate income individuals.
