Irmo Fire District Honors Life and Legacy of Former Chief Ed Flowers

Members of the Irmo Fire District and the greater community recently gathered to honor and celebrate the life of former Fire Chief George Edward “Ed” Flowers, who passed away Tuesday, March 10.

Flowers dedicated much of his life to public service, beginning his career with the Irmo Fire District in the 1970s as a firefighter. Through years of commitment and leadership, he rose through the ranks and served as fire chief from 1985 to 1995.

During his tenure, Flowers played a pivotal role in shaping the department’s identity, helping establish the standards, values, and sense of service that continue to guide its members today.

“Chief Flowers’ impact on this department extends far beyond his years of service,” the district shared in a statement. “His leadership helped build the strong tradition and commitment to service that our members carry forward every day.”

Those who knew him remember not only his professional accomplishments, but also his dedication to his colleagues and the community he served. His influence is still felt throughout the department, both in its operations and in the culture he helped foster.

Members of the Irmo Fire District expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have known and served alongside Flowers and said they remain committed to carrying on the legacy he leaves behind.
