“We laid an egg tonight.”
This was the blunt, sobering assessment of Irmo High School head football coach Aaron Brand following last Friday’s 24-14 loss to Rock Hill at W.C. Hawkins Stadium.
Brimming with confidence in the weeks leading to the contest, the Yellow Jackets found themselves trailing 17-0 at halftime. Despite cutting the deficit to three and holding the Bearcats to seven points in the second half, missed opportunities prevented them from completing the comeback.
Irmo’s last three offensive series ended with back-to-back interceptions and a missed field goal. Further impeding the Yellow Jackets’ chances were 22 penalties.
“We’ve got to coach it better,” Brand said. “We’ve got to behave better, especially in between the whistle. We’re just so arrogant and not being able to answer the bell with that arrogance.
“It’s me. It’s got to be me because you can’t say the things I said and expect your team to do the things that we did; expect your team to do we’re supposed to do and then just lay an egg.”
Irmo looks to rebound before a televised audience on the road. It travels to Harry Parone Stadium to face Spring Valley (0-1) in the WACH 57 Whataburger Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week.
