Nick Kessler, General Manager at Gamecock Sports Properties (Learfield), addressed Rotary Club of Lake Murray/Irmo regarding the shifting economic landscape of college athletics, specifically focusing on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the SEC ecosystem.

The Business of College Sports

Kessler detailed the role of Learfield, which manages corporate sponsorships for over 150 schools. While traditionally an advertising and licensing firm, the organization has pivoted toward becoming a “tech and NIL company” to navigate new player compensation models.

Market Scale: College sports boast 195 million fans in the U.S., surpassing the NFL in total fan count. Within this, the SEC ranks as the second most-watched sports entity on television, trailing only the NFL.

Revenue Generation: A primary focus is maximizing “on-field” assets, such as the recently approved playing surface branding (e.g., the Blanchard Caterpillar logo on the South Carolina field). These assets capitalize on massive TV viewership, such as the 7.8 million viewers for the Alabama game.
