Local naturalist offers state trips

Wingard’s Market Wildlife Specialist Zach Steinhauser has announced the opening of his new business, The Carolina Safari Company (CSC), where he will lead guided tours of the unique southeastern landscapes and wildlife. The next upcoming adventure is a Coastal Fossil Hunt in Charleston March 25.

“I love being able to provide people with opportunities to experience these wildlife phenomena and educate in the process. I found my niche in specializing in the southeast as most tour companies are taking folks around the world instead of a few hours from home,” said Steinhauser.

Working as a Naturalist, he began leading guided birdwatching trips in the Columbia area. His premiere trip is taking guests out on Lake Murray to North America’s largest Purple Martin roost. He went on to make a feature-length documentary about the Purple Martins called Purple Haze: A Conservation Film. It was when he began leading these trips that he realized his passion for connecting people to nature through firsthand encounters.
The Carolina Safari Co. has planned expeditions that range from rare birdwatching events to up-close large animal encounters and paddling trips with hopes of incorporating scuba diving soon.

A few upcoming trips in South Carolina this Spring include Shorebird Migration Birdwatching in Kiawah, A Walk in the Swamp at Beidler Forest in Harleyville, Mississippi Kites & Spring Migration Birdwatching in West Columbia, and Paddling among Spider Lilies in Catawba SC.
