The Town of Irmo has had parking restrictions in place for nearly five years and during the June 17 Town Council meeting those ordinances were clarified and brought up to date in preparation to act on enforcement. However, that won’t come for a year from this July.
“The first thing it does (the ordinance) is address heavy duty vehicles including construction equipment, semis, RVs and boats parked in the road or parked in the front yard,” said Assistant Town Administrator Doug Polen. “Commercial vehicles like box trucks and above are just not going to be allowed in our residential areas but if you have like an F450 or similar that’s perfectly fine.”
Personal vehicles need to be parked on prepared surfaces which include asphalt, gravel, cement and the gravel should be surrounded by landscaping timbers or bricks or flagstones.
“Waiting a year to enforce these restrictions gives residents time to come up with solutions,” said Town Administrator Courtney Dennis. “It’s always been a safety issue about ensuring our first responders can get through on the roads.”
