Supporting Literacy and Community at H. E. Corley Elementary
IRMO — The community at H. E. Corley Elementary School recently came together for a heartfelt celebration of generosity, remembrance and impact, raising $7,000 to support literacy initiatives at the school.
The effort was part of the Tank Gives Back initiative, in partnership with the Run Hard Running Team and H. E. Corley Elementary, and was held in honor of the late Sarah Harmon, a beloved kindergarten teacher and the school’s 2012–2013 Teacher of the Year.
Harmon, who passed away last year after a courageous battle with colon cancer, was remembered for her deep commitment to students and her passion for literacy and learning. Friends, family and community members gathered to walk in her memory, celebrate her life and present the proceeds back to the school she loved.
The funds will be used to enhance literacy resources for students and to create a mural reflecting Harmon’s love of education—serving as a lasting, daily reminder of her influence.
“It is an absolute honor to celebrate the life and legacy of an amazing teacher,” said Principal Melanie Harris. “Sarah was more than an educator—she was a light in our school, a champion for children and a heart that touched every student she taught. We are so grateful for her family and their foundation, wanting to pour back into the school Sarah loved so dearly. The Harmon family, along with the Run Hard Running Team and so many generous donors, have immensely blessed us. We are beyond grateful and will honor and treasure Sarah’s legacy. Her impact lives on at H.E. Corley, and we are so proud to carry it forward.”
Through the partnership and community support, Harmon’s legacy continues to shine—impacting future generations of students and reinforcing the enduring importance of literacy, compassion and dedication in education.
