The South Carolina Military Museum invites the public to experience a unique celebration of music and military history at the “War Songs” music festival on Friday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 1 National Guard Road, Columbia.
This free, family-friendly event honors the 250th anniversary of the formation of the first Continental Army regiments, showcasing how music has supported and shaped military culture throughout American history.
“People generally don’t realize the importance of music in the military,” said Heather McPherson, Curator of Collections. “This event will show that.”

The day kicks off with a performance of the National Anthem by Miss South Carolina, Davis Walsh.
“We’re so excited to have groups that highlight such a wide variety of music,” said Christopher Mielke, Curator of Exhibits. “All of which ties back to South Carolina’s special role as a training ground for all branches of the U.S. military.”
🎖 Supporting Exhibits and Access
The festival complements the museum’s current War Songs exhibit, exploring the historic role of music in military life—from rallying troops to maintaining morale.
The South Carolina Military Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last tours beginning at 3:30 p.m. Admission is always free.
