If you are interested in stretching your mind and body while making new friends, consider registering for the Shepherd’s Center of St. Andrews Winter Session of Adventures in Learning, which begins January 21.
The Center, an interfaith learning program for active adults aged 50 and above, meets Tuesdays onsite at Center headquarters, Ashland United Methodist Church, 2600 Ashland Road, Columbia, and Wednesdays and Thursdays via Zoom for the eight-week session.
Subject courses and activity classes, taught by knowledgeable volunteers from local colleges and the community, range from chair yoga to “In the News,” an open, non-agenda-driven discussion of current news stories. You can step into the world of England’s Tudor dynasty to learn of the intrigue, danger, scandal, passion, and betrayal that characterized their reign; explore Hollywood’s Golden Year,1939, which delivered landmark films including “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone with the Wind”; or find out that Jane Austen, “Not What You May Think,” was much more fun than contemporary readers imagine.
You can also learn how to speak Spanish (3 levels.), play the ukulele (also 3 levels.), or succeed at Mah Jongg, all the while improving your skills at quilting, bridge, line dancing, and watercolor.
