The Key to a Proper Wind-Up

By Robin All, PGA Life Member

Commonly referred to as the “wind-up,” the proper golf swing sequence begins with a full hip turn, a shift in weight, and a shoulder turn that allows the extended arms to swing freely. As the wrists hinge, the clubface sets naturally into the correct position for the intended shot shape.

The most common issue I see in students? They’re not light enough on their feet to allow a full hip turn and weight transfer on the backswing. That means there’s nothing to shift at the top, and the downswing starts with poor sequencing—or no sequence at all.

If we can learn to go back right, we may finally learn how to start down correctly.
