Argument Leads to Shooting Death

Chief Terrence Green would like to notify the Town of Lexington community about a shooting death that Lexington Police Department, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of West Main Street to a location behind the Town Square shopping center near the closed Kmart for a shooting that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers found a woman, age 72 of Gilbert, with a gunshot wound to the face and immediately began rendering aid until Lexington County EMS arrived.

The woman passed away while being transported to the hospital.

The victim has been identified as Judy Burnett, 72, of Gilbert, the coroner confirmed.

Officers found a man, age 49 of Lexington, at the scene with a handgun. He was taken into investigative detention and is being interviewed by detectives.

A witness at the scene stated that the shooting had occurred during an argument.

This investigation is ongoing and more information, including the names of those involved, may be released at a later time.
