Blaze displaces 29 people

A fire that broke out at the Gleneagle Apartment Homes on St. Andrews Road near the intersection of I-26 displaced 16 adults and 13 children and destroyed eight apartments. The fire happened around 5 pm December 13 which started as a cooking fire and then spread through the apartment, onto the balcony and finally engulfed the entire building. The building is now uninhabitable.

Firefighters from Irmo, Lexington, Columbia and West Columbia responded to help extinguish the flames. No residents of the apartments or any firefighters were hurt during the incident though it was reported that three people jumped from a second story to escape possible injuries.

Irmo Fire is investigating the case.
