Columbia Baroque offers online concert

Columbia Baroque will hold a free online concert, Home for the Holidays, December 4.

Peter Hoyt will host this program featuring music for solo instruments and chamber music.

The concert opens with music from Paris, as Gail Ann Schroeder performs a Prelude by virtuoso viol player and composer Le Sieur de Machy, followed by Jerry Curry presenting François Couperin’s “Les Idées Heureuses” (Happy Ideas) for solo harpsichord.

Our program continues with a special mother-daughter duet by baroque violinist Mary Hostetler Hoyt and cellist Cecilia Hoyt. They will perform a sonata by French-Guadeloupen composer Chevalier de Sainte-George; the son of a plantation owner and his wife’s African slave. Sainte-George was a virtuoso violinist, conductor, and the first well-known classical composer of African descent.

With a nod to the holidays, Jean Hein will play Jacob van Eyck’s variations for solo recorder on the Dutch Christmas tune “Puer nobis nacitur.” van Eyck was a blind carillonneur who played variations on recorder in the church gardens. His variations were compiled into the first collection of music for solo recorder. This is followed by Schroeder’s return to perform two dance movements for solo viol from a de Machy Suite.

The program concludes with music for lute and voice featuring lutenist Hazel Ketchum and mezzo-soprano Brittnee Siemon. Ketchum will perform an Italian sonata of dances by Giovanni Zamboni, and Siemon and Ketchum will present a gorgeous nativity lullaby by Giovanni Kapsberger.
