Rebecca Murphy of the Litter Warriors was awarded the 2023 Green Award from Keep The Midlands Beautiful as the Adopt-A-Highway Group of the Year.
The Litter Warriors have collected more than 19,000 lbs of trash. Last week the group transcended on Regency Drive and picked up 5 bags of trash in under 45 minutes. Current Irmo Town Councilman and candidate for Mayor, Bill Danielson, along with Irmo Town Councilman Erik Sickinger who is seeking re-election helped in the effort.
Litter Warriors began when a mom wanted her daughter to have a productive way to spend the summer. People on Facebook sponsored her to pick up trash. It’s grown into the organization it is today.
Murphy says, “A lot of people that volunteer with us are from out of state and they came here because South Carolina is beautiful and they want to keep it that way”
Many of the volunteers help because they love where they live, they think the midlands are beautiful, and want to make a positive change to combating roadside litter.
