School District Five celebrated a wall-raiser ceremony August 27 at Harbison West Elementary School Gifted and Talent Development Magnet.
The renovation project will enclose existing classroom walls to create contained, individual classrooms designed to support a more focused and modern learning environment for students and faculty and create environments where teachers can more effectively engage students.
The wall-raising project is part of the district’s ongoing capital improvement efforts made possible through the 2024 bond referendum, which is funding projects designed to enhance learning environments, improve school facilities and meet the evolving needs of students and staff across the district.
“Today’s wall-raiser ceremony represents an exciting step forward for our students, teachers and entire Harbison West community,” said Jeanna Locklair, principal of Harbison West Elementary School Gifted and Talent Development Magnet. “We are grateful for the investment being made in our school and excited to see these improvements become a reality for our students and staff.”
Harbison West Elementary School’s Gifted and Talented Development Magnet provides students with opportunities to explore their interests, develop their talents and engage in learning experiences. The renovated classroom spaces will provide an environment that supports the school’s specialized programming and instructional needs.

Ross, Sr., Superintendent of Lexington-Richland School District Five. “While we may not be putting shovels into the ground today, we are marking the beginning of something very important by signing a beam that will become part of the new walls that will transform this space. We want to thank the teachers who have made Harbison West such a special place over the years. They have taken an unconventional learning environment and made it work for generations of students. We look forward to seeing the incredible learning spaces they will create for our students in the future.”
