District Five of Lexington & Richland Counties will host a district-wide Literacy Night for pre-kindergarten through third grade students on April 27, 2023, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Ballentine Elementary School. This event is for School District Five parents and guardians to learn literacy tips and resources for working with their student(s) at home.
At its most basic level, literacy is the ability to read, write and communicate with others. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 1 in 3 American children start kindergarten without the language skills they need to learn to read. Through this Literacy Night, School District Five aims to partner with parents and guardians of the district’s youngest learners to cultivate an early love of reading and share tips to promote success in reading skills.
School District Five Director of Elementary Education Tina McCaskill said, “Student literacy is the most crucial part of a child’s development when looking at their continued success as they advance each grade level. If we can provide parents and guardians with the resources they need to work with their students at home and what to look for, it will encourage their child’s literacy development, foster a love of reading and most importantly the ability to partner with their child’s teacher in achieving literacy goals.”
Every student in attendance will receive a free book. Those interested in attending the event must RSVP by April 20, 2023, at the following link: https://bit.ly/AprilD5LitNight.
