District Five school receives Wildlife Federation grant

Leaphart Elementary School STEAM Magnet in Lexington has been named as one of the fortunate recipients of the 2023-2024 Wildlife Connections from the Mountains to the Sea grant, a collaborative initiative by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation (SCWF) and Dominion Energy.

This marks the second year of the program, specifically designed for 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade teachers, with a preference for Title 1 schools in Charleston, Lexington, Newberry, Richland, and Saluda counties. Out of numerous applicants, Leaphart Elementary School is one of only eight schools across the state selected to participate in this year’s program.

The Wildlife Connections grant, made possible through the generosity of Dominion Energy, supports a unique science-based curriculum developed by SCWF staff. The program aims to educate students on the intricate relationships between wildlife and their habitats, emphasizing the interconnectedness of South Carolina’s diverse ecosystems.

Leaphart Elementary School’s Digital Integration Specialist, Heather Reitenga, expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “The program holds particular significance for us given our dedication to STEAM education. The kit, brimming with materials for three hands-on activities catering to 30 students, promises an enriching learning experience.”

Students at Leaphart Elementary will be engaged through a variety of methods, including hands-on activities, class visits from SCWF education staff, and take-home materials to encourage outdoor exploration. The grant includes virtual training in Project WILD and accompanying guides to prepare teachers for seamless integration of engaging activities into the curriculum.

Heather Reitenga highlighted the program’s alignment with the school’s commitment to providing meaningful, hands-on environmental education experiences. “This grant is a testament to Leaphart Elementary’s dedication to fostering a holistic understanding of the natural world,” she remarked.

Dominion Energy’s President for South Carolina, Keller Kissam, expressed pride in the partnership and the impact it will have on the state’s environment. “Dominion Energy is proud to partner with these organizations that make South Carolina beautiful from the mountains to the sea,” said Kissam. “It’s a privilege to partner with groups who are committed to supporting sustainable programs that will preserve and enhance the communities where we live and work for generations to come.” The grant, entirely funded by Dominion Energy, reinforces the company’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener world and promoting environmental stewardship.
