Lex Rich District 5 Special Services recently held their multi-school Job Olympics which gives children with special needs an opportunity to compete with other children in the district. The students are given everyday tasks such as folding and hanging up clothes, bagging groceries, job interviews and other skills that can help them be productive in the workforce.
“This is an opportunity for the students to practice general living skills,” said Dr. Angie Slatton, Director of Special Service. “With a little practice, they can then go into the community with the confidence to become more self-sustaining.”
Students wore colored t-shirts representing their schools and went from station to station in the competition.
District 5 Special Services provides a free, appropriate public education to students with disabilities ages 3 to 21 in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Students with disabilities are served in the least restrictive environment as indicated in their Individual Education Plans.
