Nursery Road Elementary School-Arts Magnet student Micaela Conyers recently competed in the fifth annual Carolina Panthers Region Scripps Spelling Bee featuring top spellers from South Carolina and North Carolina. The event was held February 28 at Bank of America Stadium.
The Regional event serves as a major qualifier for the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee which takes place in Washington, D.C. May 26 – 28.
Conyers was selected to participate in the spelling bee after competing through a spelling bee at her school. This was her first time competing at the regional level. She made it to Round 3, but was taken out by the word “auspices”. She said she would love to compete again.
“I loved the experience that I had meeting new people and getting exposed to new words,” Micaela Conyers said. “This experience is forever etched in my mind.”
Micaela’s mom Tiffany Conyers said she was first “stung” by the spelling bee at Nursery Road Elementary as a third grader; winning second place. Since then, she had the goal of becoming the school spelling bee champion.
“We are beyond proud of Micaela,” Tiffany Conyers said. “She always had an innate interest to phonetics and semantics and word play. She has a way with words and is an amazing communicator so it was no surprise that she enjoyed spelling, learning new words and impressing us with her vocabulary.”
Nursery Road Elementary School Principal Karey Fisher added, “Micaela shows what is possible when a student believes in a goal and works relentlessly to achieve it. Since third grade, she set her goal and pursued it with determination, studying root words and practicing with her family, teacher, and reading coach. Her perseverance led her to become our school’s spelling bee champion in her fifth-grade year and represent our school at the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee in Charlotte. We are incredibly proud of Micaela.”
