District Five’s school bus drivers play an important role

Education for many students in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties begins with a bus ride. School District Five’s Transportation Department, although not located in a classroom, plays a large part in the district’s vision of Loving and Growing Our Students. Our bus drivers create a culture of positive interaction with students, families and school staff to help foster student success and learning. Our school buses set the stage for daily learning as well as provide a place where safety is the first priority.

The School District Five Transportation Department is charged with the responsibility of moving the district’s most valuable cargo. While traveling by school bus has been proven to be the safest mode of transportation, this requires an ongoing effort and must have support from parents. It is extremely important that bus drivers and parents instruct students in safety procedures such as going to and from the bus stop in a safe manner, standing away from traffic, and not playing in or around the bus. The Transportation Department also hosts semi-annual emergency bus evacuation drills (in the fall semester and spring semester) in order to teach students what to do in the event of an emergency.

School District Five bus drivers also Love and Grow Our Students in the community. Recently, Dutch Fork High School held a fundraiser for the volleyball team at Eggs Up Grill, and several drivers showed their support by donating to the cause.
