Dutch Fork Elementary receives grant from the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District

IRMO – Dutch Fork Elementary School Academy of Environmental Sciences will expand its hands-on environmental learning this year thanks to a $1,000 Conservation Education Mini-Grant from the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD). The funding will support the school’s gardens and nature trail.

Each year, RSWCD awards Conservation Education Mini-Grants to county schools to enhance youth education projects. These initiatives give students the opportunity to take learning outdoors, gaining firsthand experience in conservation, sustainability, and natural resource stewardship. Funding comes from individual donors, businesses, and community support through the Friends of RSWCD.

Dutch Fork Elementary students maintain multiple gardens across campus. The grant will help replace broken or outdated equipment and provide water for the gardens. The school plans to install two drip irrigation systems with timers, reducing the time spent watering and allowing more gardens to be maintained during the summer months. Funds will also be used to purchase a trimmer to maintain the walking path on the nature trail, ensuring safe and accessible outdoor learning spaces.

“The RSWCD has supported environmental and natural resource conservation activities at Dutch Fork Elementary for many years through their grant program,” said Resident Scientist Matt Schnabel. “Many of our projects, including our multiple gardens, are possible because of their support. Our shared vision to create an environmentally literate community is something I hope to continue growing for many years to come.”

Dutch Fork Elementary is an environmental science magnet school and a participant in the SC Green Steps Schools program. Teachers and students across all grade levels work in the gardens alongside Green Steps mentors, and families have opportunities to explore the gardens and nature trail during school events.

Richland County supports RSWCD’s mission through staff and other resources. The district is dedicated to fostering conservation education and stewardship among local youth and the broader community.
