Dutch Fork Students Bring Astronomy to Life at SpringFest

Three Dutch Fork High School students took their passion for the stars to the community on Saturday, April 5, by sharing their astronomy knowledge at the District Five Foundation’s annual SpringFest.

Claire P., Gracey J., and Laylah T., all members of Dutch Fork’s astronomy classes, volunteered their time to teach young attendees and their families about solar observation and lunar science. Using homemade solar observatories crafted from cardboard boxes and aluminum foil, the students demonstrated how to safely view the sun—an activity that proved both educational and exciting for all ages.

Throughout the day, the students guided more than 100 participants through the process of building their own observatories and fielded a wide range of questions about space, the solar system, and astronomical events.

One of the highlights was a hands-on demonstration of how craters form on the moon—modeled after a classroom lab activity that clearly left an impression on the young scientists.

The event was a fun and engaging way for students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom and share it with the community. It also gave festivalgoers an up-close look at the wonders of astronomy, thanks to the enthusiastic outreach of these future scientists.
