Events in Irmo

Dear Editor,

As I look over my calendar for this spring, I’m so impressed by the number of new events in Irmo. When my husband and I moved here in 2009, the only civic celebration that we knew of was the Okra Strut. We had to travel to either Lexington or Columbia for family-friendly weekend entertainment. Now we have a crawfish boil, the Irmo International Festival, the Juneteenth Luncheon, and the July 4th movie and fireworks in the park coming up in the next few months.

Over the past few years, I’ve grown prouder and prouder to live in this area, and for that I tip my hat to Mayor Walker. In 2019, when he offered to drive people to the polls, I told my friends and family near and far that he was the kind of servant leader I was proud to vote for. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s consistently shown level-headed, empathetic leadership that balances the health of Irmo’s citizen’s with the needs for goods and services. Most recently, he’s established cohesion on our Town Council. I know that when I read about Irmo in the news, it will be positive.

I’m prouder than ever to live in Irmo and I can’t wait to see what the future holds with Mayor Barry Walker’s leadership.

Sincerely,

E. Stewart Davis, MPH
