Fake DMV Texts Still Circulating—Officials Urge Caution

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is warning residents about scam text messages impersonating the agency.

The SCDMV does not collect toll fees, traffic tickets, or other payments via text message. These scam texts often include a link that mimics the official SCDMV website. The only legitimate website for the agency is SCDMVOnline.com.

As scammers increasingly use artificial intelligence to imitate official sources, consumers are urged to double-check web addresses and remain cautious of messages that push urgent action, especially ones threatening penalties.

The SCDMV emphasizes that it communicates official notices through the U.S. Postal Service, often providing at least 30 days’ notice of any license or registration issues.

If you receive a suspicious message:

  • Delete it immediately. Do not click the link.

  • Report it to your mobile provider by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM).

  • Consider reporting to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

  • If you clicked the link or shared information, monitor your financial accounts for unusual activity.

Stay alert. Protect your information. And always verify before you click.
