The Town of Irmo has appointed Joe Nates, a former police chief, as its new Civil Code Compliance Inspector. This newly created civilian role aims to enhance code compliance within the town and allow police officers to focus on other law enforcement duties.
Nates, who served as Irmo’s police chief from 2015 to 2016, brings over 20 years of experience in law enforcement to the position. Although retired from active police service, Nates will now take on the responsibility of enforcing Irmo’s municipal codes and zoning ordinances, including nuisance abatement, rental housing regulations, and various environmental codes.
“This is a better allocation of our resources,” said Town Administrator Courtney Dennis. “We know that a large majority of complaints are resolved through education of our ordinances. Having a civilian like Joe Nates make the contact and help in that education process frees up our police officers for other essential duties.”
In his new role, Nates will provide zoning approval for new construction and renovations and offer information to residents on the town’s development standards and land use regulations. Though not a police officer, Nates will work closely with the Irmo Police Department to issue warrants and summonses and maintain records of cases where violations are observed and corrective action is required.
Previously, code enforcement in Irmo was handled by a police officer. The transition to a civilian position is part of the town’s strategy to improve efficiency and maintain high levels of compliance.
“We already do well with compliance, achieving over ninety percent most of the time,” added Dennis.
Nates’ appointment underscores Irmo’s commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly community while optimizing the use of its law enforcement resources.
