Free Renaissance Faire coming to Irmo

The Midlands has a new free community arts tradition in the making. The Festival at the Friars’ Gate, a brand-new Renaissance Faire, will make its debut May 16–17 at Moore Park in Irmo.

Admission is free, though guests are encouraged to register for complimentary tickets in advance at www.friarsgatefestival.com/tickets.

Spanning two full days from 10 am to 6 pm the festival will transform Moore Park into a living, breathing Renaissance experience, drawing on the rich traditions of medieval art, culture, pageantry and community. Organizers expect the event to become a signature annual celebration for Irmo and the broader Midlands region.

Festival at the Friars’ Gate will offer something for every member of the family across both days of the event, including:

• Medieval combat demonstrations by the Palmetto Knights, Albion and the Knights of Myth

• More than 120 artisan craft vendors of all types

• Local honey and baked goods

• Live music and performances throughout the weekend including a handbell concert by Eastminster Presbyterian Church, fire spinning and trained dogs

• Food and drink vendors including mead, beer, wine and turkey legs

• Family and children’s activities

• Community organization participation including the Irmo Art Guild, Lexington County Public Library and local SCA

• Costume contest judged by the royal court

The festival is free and open to all ages, making it an ideal outing for families, couples, history enthusiasts, art lovers, and anyone looking for a unique and memorable weekend experience in the Midlands.

“We wanted to create something truly special for the Midlands — the festival takes its name and its lore from the Friarsgate neighborhood and Irmo streets,” said Scottie Claiborne, festival organizer. “It’s a whimsical tribute to the spirit of Irmo.”
