Vi Melissa Humphries-Racine or just Vi as we know her at the newspaper passed on Saturday, June 30 on to a much better place. We were blessed to have Vi at the newspapers from the early 2000s until 2013.
The staff at the newspaper always loved to see her come into the office and Vi’s customers adored her.
Vi always looked to the bright side of every story. She refused to give in to petty spats or office politics and always maintained a professional and knowledgeable demeanor. You were never depressed around Vi because she wouldn’t let you get away with it.
Vi had a southern belle aura about her with a lilting voice and polite mannerisms. She was an attractive vibrant woman with a gleam in her eye that hinted at mischievous. But don’t let that sweet innocent look fool you. If you crossed her you would soon see her no-nonsense ‘get up you ain’t hurt, I don’t take any crap from anyone, I’ll rip your throat out, sit down and shut up or you better get your gear together’ attitude that she handed out with a smile on her face and was still ‘oh so’ polite about it.
We were saddened when she left the newspaper to pursue a career with the Town of Irmo. She served as the business license and zoning clerk but did so much more for the town just by her presence there. At the newspaper, we stayed in close contact with Vi and would catch up on things frequently.
Vi was born on January 7, 1958, and left a hole in our hearts on June 30, 2023.
We will miss Vi dearly and she will remain in our hearts forever.
