Golf Tips for Seniors: Pre-Shot Routine

By Robin All, PGA Life Member

A consistent pre-shot routine is one of the best ways to improve your golf game—especially for senior players looking to lower their scores.

First, stand behind the ball and visualize the intended path to your target. Look for a small mark or spot two to three feet in front of the ball along your target line—it’s much easier to aim accurately at a closer target.

Next, approach the ball from the side and set your club head level on the ground with the club face square to the target line. Keep the club grounded as you adjust your feet into the proper stance for your shot.

Now, trace the target line from the ball to your target slowly three or four times. Remember, golfers actually hit the ball toward a target in their memory while focusing on the ball itself.

Top players often look at the target five or more times before taking the shot—this helps reinforce focus and confidence.

Develop a repeatable pre-shot routine, and you’ll see your average score come down over time.
