Irmo boys clinch playoff berth

As the final week of the regular season approaches, both Irmo basketball teams seek to improve their post-season hopes.

The Lady Yellow Jackets entered Tuesday’s matchup against Chapin a game out of fourth place in Region 4-5A. A victory over the Lady Eagles would move them into a tie for fourth going into Thursday’s finale at rival Dutch Fork.

Instead, Chapin came out on top 64-46 behind 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists from senior Reagan Haggard. With the loss, Irmo (11-12, 2-7) is locked in fifth place with one game left.

Meanwhile, the boys looked to clinch third place in the region. On Friday, Irmo defeated White Knoll 64-41 behind 17 points from Christian Brown, 15 points from Jaden Rivers and 14 points from Antwoine Pierce.

On Tuesday, it held off a late rally by the Eagles to win 66-55. Pierce led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points, Jeremy Anderson had 13 points and five rebounds and Matthew Hopkins finished with 10 points.

With the playoff position set, Irmo (16-8, 5-4) can play spoiler to archrival Dutch Fork. A win over the Silver Foxes could either set them up for a one-game playoff Friday against River Bluff in the “Temple of Doom” or cost Dutch Fork the region title with a Gators’ win over Lexington.
