Irmo’s varsity basketball teams lost region games against Westwood last week, with the boys going into double overtime before it was over.
This puts the boys at 3-1 in Region 5-AAAA and 17-3 overall, while the girls are now at 6-10, 1-3. That also makes it a tie with Ridge View in the boys region games, but the Blazers are now at 11-9 overall.
Against Westwood, the Yellow Jacket and Redhawk boys were tied at 46 at the end of regulation play, and then tied again at 52 with each team scoring just 6 points in the first overtime.
It was the second overtime when things went the wrong way for the Jackets. Westwood put up 13 points while Irmo scored 4 to take the first region loss of the season.
The Redhawks improved to 2-2 in the region, along with Richland Northeast and A. C. Flora, with Lugoff-Elgin standing at 0-4 at the beginning of this week’s games.
In the girls game, Irmo went up against the top team in the region, and in the second half the Redhawks demonstrated why they are tops in region play.
The Lady Yellow Jackets played a head-to-head game with Westwood in the first half, trailing by just 1 point (10-9) in the first quarter and by 3 (21-17) at halftime.
But things went off the rails for Irmo in the second half when Westwood scored 22 points to the Jackets’ 5 in the third quarter to give the Redhawks as many points in that quarter as Irmo’s total for the game at that point.
Westwood went on to put up 14 points to Irmo’s 4 in the final quarter to remain undefeated in Region 5-AAAA.
In region competition, A. C. Flora and Ridge View follow Westwood at 3-1, Richland Northeast is at 1-3 along with Irmo, and Lugoff-Elgin was at 0-4, all as this week’s games got underway.
The Yellow Jackets were to play host to Lugoff-Elgin early this week, and they will be at home against Richland Northeast on Friday; Girls at 6 pm, Boys at 7:30.
In Region 4-AAAAA, Dutch Fork and Chapin went 1-1 in last week’s varsity basketball conference games.
The Silver Fox girls defeated Chapin 76-22 on Tuesday, last week, and then lost 45-41 at River Bluff on Friday to stand at 9-8, 2-1 as they traveled to Lexington to take on the Wildcats early this week.
The Silver Fox boys defeated Chapin 52-37 early last week, and then took a 50-43 loss at River Bluff at the end of the week. They carried a 7-10, 2-1 record as they prepared to visit the Wildcats on Tuesday, this week.
Dutch Fork have a vacant date Friday and will return to action against White Knoll on Tuesday, next week, when they visit White Knoll; Girls at 6 pm, boys at 7:30.
After the Chapin girls’ loss against Dutch Fork early last week, they completed the week with a win over White Knoll (53-30) to stand at 7-7, 1-2 before this week’s games got started.
And after Chapin’s varsity boys lost the game at Dutch Fork, they then beat White Knoll 69-63 to finish the week at 6-12, 1-2.
After the region game at River Bluff early this week, the Eagles will travel to take on Lexington on Friday, with the girls starting at 6 pm and the boys at 7:30 pm.
