More than 100 people gathered at Irmo High School on December 13 for its annual Goodwill Brunch. Established nine years ago, the event aims to bridge the generation gap between students and senior citizens by inviting them to enjoy student performances and a traditional Southern breakfast.
“The Goodwill Brunch gives us an opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to our senior community who serve us all year by volunteering in our school and attending our events,” said Irmo High School Assistant Principal of Instruction Janel Johnson. “Our students also get to showcase their talent to the senior community by showing them what they have been working on all year. The students organize the event from start to finish and in the process learn skills that will serve them well after they leave Irmo High School.”
Following a meal provided by the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission and the School District Five Student Nutrition Department, guests enjoyed a variety of performances. The lineup included the Irmo High School Orchestra, Theater students, the Irmo High School IB Dance and Honors Dance Ensemble, the Irmo High School Concert Choir, the Irmo High School World Percussion and Contemporary Music Group, and the Irmo Guitar Ensemble.
Irmo High School Student Body President Baxley Baker reflected on the rewarding experience of volunteering at the event.
“The Goodwill Brunch is really a rewarding experience because we are able to serve and help seniors in our community,” Baker said. “I am thankful that we can offer these members of our community a great event during the holidays because not everyone has a family to enjoy the season with. I am glad that we can make them feel at home here at our school because it makes it all worthwhile.”
