The holiday spirit radiated through the halls of Brookdale Senior Living as students from Irmo High School’s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) demonstrated the true essence of giving back. On December 5, these compassionate students embarked on a heartwarming volunteering initiative, bringing joy and festive cheer to the elderly residents.
With smiles on their faces, Irmo FCCLA students gathered to decorate a tree for Brookdale’s upcoming Festival of Trees, slated for later this month. Their creativity and collaborative spirit shone through as they worked diligently to craft a beautiful tree that promises to bring joy to the seniors and staff alike.
However, the volunteering experience extended beyond decorating. The students engaged with the residents in various activities, including making snow globes, sharing stories, laughter, and the overall joy of the holiday season. This interaction not only showcased the students’ commitment but also fostered a sense of connection and companionship with the senior residents.
Kelly Lageman, the Resident Programs Coordinator at Brookdale Senior Living, expressed the residents’ delight at the Irmo FCCLA students’ visit. “They were happy and felt the community cared and remembered them,” said Lageman.
The Irmo FCCLA students’ commitment to community service aligns with the true meaning of the holiday season — coming together to spread joy and make a positive impact. Senior Chole Howard shared her sentiments, saying, “Working with the seniors was a wonderful experience and allowed me to feel good about myself and FCCLA. I enjoy giving back to the community. I enjoyed everything about today, talking with the seniors, decorating the tree, and listening to the Irmo Elementary choir made the day wonderful.”
The positive impact of this holiday visit resonated so strongly that the students were invited back to work with the seniors later in the school year, reinforcing the lasting connections forged during this season of goodwill.
