Irmo Middle School Wrestling Triumphs at Area 5 Qualifiers

In a display of exceptional talent and determination, Irmo Middle School Wrestlers made their mark at the Area 5 Qualifiers held at Gilbert High School on January 6. Sanctioned by the South Carolina High School League, this event served as a stepping stone for eight Irmo Middle School wrestlers to advance to the SCHSL Sectionals, a crucial precursor to the highly anticipated Carolina Invitational, widely recognized as the State Middle School Championship Tournament.

Out of the 11 wrestlers representing Irmo Middle School, an impressive eight secured their spots in the SCHSL Sectionals. The top six wrestlers from the Area 5 Junior Varsity/Middle School Qualifier will now progress to the Carolina Invitational Sectional Qualifier, with the ultimate goal of earning a place in the Carolina Invitational and vying for the prestigious South Carolina Middle School State Championship.

A standout performer of the day was IMS 7th Grader Luke Sevilla, boasting an undefeated record of 22-0 in the 126 lb. weight class. Sevilla, a California SCWAY Kids State Wrestling Runner-Up and a NUWAY All-American, clinched the Area 5 Championship by overcoming opponents from River Bluff, Lexington, White Knoll, North Augusta, and North Aiken.

Another formidable wrestler, IMS 8th Grader Ayden Floyd (19-3), secured a spot in the Championship Bout in the 145 lb division. Facing teammate Darian Green, the match unfolded as a last-second thriller, with Green emerging victorious in a close 5-4 contest.

Despite the challenges, Irmo Middle School wrestlers demonstrated remarkable prowess throughout the competition. Notable performances included 8th Grader Curtis Thompson’s dominant season as a first-year wrestler, and the impressive showing of 7th Grader Caleb Casillas in the stacked 120 lb division.

In a display of teamwork and individual excellence, Irmo Middle School amassed 170.5 team points, securing 4th place overall. Surpassing rival schools Chapin, River Bluff, and Dutch Fork, Irmo Middle School showcased its competitive edge and resilience.
