IRMO, S.C. – After nearly three decades of coaching in Irmo, Barry Lee has been honored as Middle School Coach of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA).
Lee has been teaching and coaching for 34 years, with 27 of those years spent at Irmo leading middle school basketball and varsity track teams. His impact on student-athletes goes far beyond wins and losses.
“I am very thankful and blessed to have been able to teach and coach for so many years,” Lee said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to shape young lives and help make a difference each day. I have been honored to be a part of the great basketball program under Coach Tim Whipple and now, as the torch has been passed to Coach Alex Quillen. Our parents, players, and Irmo Nation support us in our efforts to be great every day.”
Lee will receive his award in July at the SCACA’s annual clinic and banquet.
Irmo High School Athletic Director Paul Calvert praised Lee’s dedication:
“After 27 years of dedication, countless championships, and the mentorship of hundreds of student-athletes, this recognition is a testament to the lasting impact Lee has had on our athletes, program, and community,” Calvert said. “His leadership, passion, and commitment have not only built winning teams but have shaped the lives of so many young athletes. This honor is well-earned, and we celebrate his accomplishments.”
The SCACA works to promote, protect, and educate student-athletes across the state by supporting coaches through leadership and professional development.
