Irmo to Host Women Veterans Recognition Day Celebration June 12

IRMO, SC – The community is invited to gather on the front lawn of Irmo Town Hall (7300 Woodrow St.) on Wednesday, June 12, at 12 Noon to celebrate Women Veterans Recognition Day and honor the brave women who have served in the U.S. military.

The event commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act by President Harry Truman on June 12, 1948, a historic milestone that granted women a permanent role in the Armed Forces.

Hosted by Shelly Langston, U.S. Navy veteran and South Carolina Ambassador for the Military Women’s Memorial (MWM), along with the Town of Irmo, the celebration will include light refreshments and a chance for the community to show appreciation for local women veterans.

HONORING WOMEN VETERANS RECOGNITION DAY

Whereas, women have courageously served in the defense of our nation since the founding of
the United States, from the Revolutionary War to the present day, often without recognition or
lasting opportunity; and

Whereas, for generations, countless women stepped forward in times of war and peace,
contributing with valor and excellence across every branch of our Armed Forces—despite
policies that limited their service and denied them permanent military careers; and

Whereas, on June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed
Services Integration Act, a landmark piece of legislation that granted women the right to serve as
permanent, regular members of the United States military; and

Whereas, this act marked a pivotal moment in American history—removing barriers to full
participation and affirming that women’s service was not only needed, but valued and essential
to our nation’s defense; and

Whereas, in the 77 years since the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act,
over 3 million women have proudly worn the uniform of the United States, demonstrating
unwavering commitment, professionalism, and patriotism; and

Whereas, Women Veterans Recognition Day, observed annually on June 12, is a time to honor
and celebrate the contributions, sacrifices, and enduring legacy of America’s military women,
both past and present; and

Whereas, we reaffirm our gratitude to all women veterans and those currently serving, and
recognize their vital role in securing our freedoms and shaping a stronger, more inclusive
military force;

Now, Therefore, I, William O. Danielson, Mayor of the Town of Irmo, do hereby proclaim June
12, 2025, as Women Veterans Recognition Day and encourage all citizens to join in honoring
the women who have proudly and bravely served in the United States Armed Forces. Let us
celebrate their achievements, amplify their stories, and recommit ourselves to ensuring that all
veterans receive the honor, respect, and support they deserve.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town of Irmo to be
affixed this 12th day of June, 2025.

William O. Danielson, Mayor
