The Irmo Town Council held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the municipal building.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cub Scout Pack 95 of Irmo. Following the pledge, Bill Danielson presented the scouts with a retired American flag that had previously flown at Irmo Veterans Park.

Broad River Road Widening Update

Richland County Director of Public Works Michael Maloney provided an update on the Broad River Road widening project.

“This is a healthy project,” Maloney said. “Completion will take roughly three years considering all the details involved.”

A tentative groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, with legislators from the state, county and Town of Irmo expected to attend.

A new traffic signal at the intersection of Farming Creek and Broad River Road is already under development. The signal will support a designated detour route when the train track overpass between Irmo and Ballentine closes later this year for structural maintenance.

DOJ Grant Deferred

Council deferred approval of a $396,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant intended for the purchase of six new police vehicles. The action was postponed due to incomplete documentation required to finalize the transaction. The Town is awaiting confirmation from the federal government before moving forward.

Annexation and Zoning Request

In new business, Council approved first reading of an ordinance to annex 16.6 acres along Broad River Road near Kennerly Road into the town limits. The property currently includes the Diesel Laptops manufacturing plant.

The company is requesting General Commercial zoning.

“This was a great team effort,” Mayor Danielson said. “Thanks to Councilman Penfield for bringing this to us.”

Diesel Laptops is participating in a Town initiative that provides a three-year deferment to lessen the initial impact of business licensing costs.

Rawls Creek Park and Okra Strut Festival

Council also passed first reading for the addition of outside basketball courts at Rawls Creek Park.

Approval was granted for a $144,000 budget for the 2026 Okra Strut Festival, matching the 2025 allocation. Phyllis Hawkins was selected to fill a vacancy on the Okra Strut Committee.
